Job Title: Linguist II
Location: US Remote option available
Preferred Location: Burlingame or Redmond - Hybrid
Duration: 12 months
About the Role: - The main function of a Linguist II is to determine speech data needs and set the strategic vision for data-based model and product improvements.
Job Responsibilities: - Provide linguistic expertise in phonetics, phonology, lexicography, dialectology, and NLP .
- Design and conduct experiments to evaluate transcription quality.
- Develop manual and automated processes across multiple concurrent projects.
- Ensure high-quality label alignments, prosodic classification, POS identification and disambiguation, targeted modeling data, and user feedback.
- Create and refine text normalization and inverse text normalization processes.
- Manage lexical and phrasal transcriptions and related metadata.
- Analyze system metrics, including user opinion, lexicon transcription coverage, and POS tagger performance, and address pain points.
Required Skills: - Knowledge of phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, dialectology , and related areas of linguistics.
- Ability to analyze waveforms and spectrograms .
- Knowledge of prescriptive writing and punctuation conventions for at least one language.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of transcription and annotation systems such as SAMPA, IPA, and ToBI .

Nice-to-Have Skills: - Linguistic knowledge with the ability to understand and identify errors.
Education & Experience: - Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, Language Technologies, Computational Linguistics, Speech Science, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience .
Key Projects / Day-to-Day Responsibilities - Provide linguistic expertise in phonetics, phonology, lexicography, dialectology, and NLP .
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners to gather and prepare audio files for TTS human evaluations .
- Work closely with external vendors to track evaluation progress, address issues or concerns, and ensure deliverables meet quality standards.
- Analyze received deliverables and provide actionable insights to cross-functional partners.
- Address deep-dive requests from stakeholders regarding specific aspects of evaluation results.
- Monitor and track annotation queues to ensure timely completion.
- Identify and address bottlenecks or delays in annotation workflows.
- Address annotator questions regarding guidelines to ensure clarity and consistency in annotation tasks.
About the Team: Data & Linguistics Team: - The team's mission is to enhance Client AI's capabilities through the power of data . The team collaborates across all layers of the AI stack and with teams across Wearables to drive evaluation and model improvements for each release.
